A NEW mosaic inspired by the paintings of cats by artist Louis Wain has been unveiled at the Museum of St Albans.
The mosaic is the last piece of the legacy from the Out of Sight, Out of Mind? project which gathered the memories of those who lived or worked at the five psychiatric hospitals located around St Albans.
Louis Wain was an inpatient at Napsbury Hospital in London Colney and his cat paintings, which feature in the collection at the Hatfield Road museum, have become increasingly recognised as important works of art.
St Albans Deputy Mayor, Cllr Beric Read, unveiled the mosaic at a ceremony attended by Maggie Appleton from the Heritage Lottery Fund which gave a grant of nearly �50,000 to the project.
The mosaic was created by participants attending the St Albans Community Mental Health Day Services in collaboration with artist Natasha Rehman. All 16 of them had an input in determining the design.
The other legacy of the Out of Sight, Out of Mind? project is a website run by volunteers which includes records of the project and articles about life in the hospitals.
Made into a living history record, the website, which can be found at www.stalbansoutofsightoutofmind.org.uk, is available for anyone who has a story to share and new material is being added all the time.
