Why were there such long queues at St Albans City this morning?

Long queues to buy tickets at St Albans City this morning have been blamed on debit and credit card payments.
This morning, commuters from St Albans City station faced longer-than-usual queues at the ticket machines outside and the ticket office inside.
Originally, this was blamed on two of the machines being out of order and on people buying weekly and monthly season tickets as today was both the first day of the week and the first day of the month.
However, Thameslink now say it was only one machine that was out of order for ten to 15 minutes.
Another problem was that credit and debit cards were not being authorised as quickly as they are normally, which was a third-party issue out of Thameslink’s control. This coincided with people buying weekly and monthly tickets.
To help shorten the queues, Thameslink staff were using handheld machines to sell tickets to waiting customers.
A Thameslink spokesperson said: “We’re sorry for the hold-up some of our passengers may have experienced at St Albans this morning, which was due to debit and credit cards being authorised slowly by a third party supplier. “Holders of our smartcard The Key can skip the queues altogether, buying their tickets online and collecting them as they touch in at the ticket gates. The smartcard also offers automatic compensation if services are delayed. There is more information at www.thameslinkrailway.com/thekey.”
