RECYCLING light bulbs and batteries is a first for an environmentally friendly supermarket in London Colney.

Sainsbury's is the first national retailer to offer co-collection for the two materials and last week the Colney Fields Shopping Park store officially opened its new on-site recycling centre.

Sainsbury's environmental affairs manager Jack Cunningham said that he was proud of the new scheme: "We're delighted to be the first to launch the scheme and, because the waste batteries and bulbs will be transported using an existing supplier to Sainsbury's, it means that two additional waste streams can be collected with no increase in carbon footprint."

The recycling service is expected to be available at all Sainsbury's stores by the end of January next year.
