Unique murals depicting the game of rugby have been restored at a local club to mark the start of the World Cup.
Old Verulamiums RFC, which is based at Cotlandswick in London Colney, commissioned local artist Ralph Howell to help restore the murals which show the faces as well as the humour surrounding the game.
They were painted in the 1960s by local artist Deirdre Paul when the pavilion was built. As well as scenes such as a scrum, she included a Fleetville girl, Patti Edwards, sitting on the bar. She went on to have a part in the original Star Trek and many Hollywood films.
And the murals might yet have a wider audience - Peter Baines, ex-St Albans RFC chairman and prospective president of the Rugby Football Union after the World Cup, has suggested that the RFU Museum might be interested in acquiring the murals should Verulamiums wish to part with them.
