Village enjoys watery themed day
IT WASN’T a case of “water, water, everywhere” as crowds enjoying Wheathampstead’s Village Day managed to stay dry despite the event’s watery theme of A Life on the Ocean Wave.
Enthusiastic parade participants dressed as pirates, sailors, jellyfish and lobsters as they helped create a spectacular show of colour alongside elaborate floats traversing Wheathampstead’s High Street on “Sea Sunday.”
Huge crowds were entertained by the Golden Oldies Pipe Band, Morris men, the winner of Saturday’s Wheathampstead’s Got Talent contest, 15-year-old Caroline Perry, and a highly competitive Most Like Your Dog competition, won by well-known village postman, Nigel Hyams, and his 10-month-old lurcher, Alfie.
There was also a hard-fought Saxons versus the Danes tug-of-war contest, part of the Wheathampstead Heritage Trail re-enactments.
The day culminated with a duck race along the River Lea, from the High Street to the picnic area of the Meads, where Wheathampstead Churches Together staged an outdoor Songs of Praise accompanied by the Salvation Army Band.
Wheathampstead councillor Annie Brewster said everyone stayed dry despite the watery theme.
