Europe’s leading Queen tribute band, Killer Queen, are performing a special charity music concert at the Alban Arena, four years after their drummer tragically died from a brain tumour.
The show is part of a fundraising path a group of women - including three from Harpenden - have set themselves upon in aid of various cancer charities.
What makes it specially poignant is that one fundraiser, Louise Kerridge, lost her musician husband to the disease.
She said: “My late husband, Roland, used to play drums with Killer Queen, and tragically his life was devastated eight years ago by a brain tumour, which took his life in 2012.
“Cancer affects everyone in some way and I’m pleased to help support cancer research in the hope that fewer people will suffer.”
She and fellow Harpenden residents, Sarah Wardley and Sally Gent, along with Meryl Church, from Bellingdon, near Chesham, have organised the charity music concert to take place at the Alban Arena on Sunday, May 15. Sarah said: “We have all, sadly, been affected by cancer, one way or another, but we thought we would do something to help cancer charities, and Killer Queen is a big tribute band.”
The four women, all aged around 60, are also riding as part of ‘Women V Cancer’ on Saturday May 28 in the ‘Ride the Night’ challenge. All have been in training for several months in preparation for the 100km cycle ride from Windsor racecourse, in to central London and back.
They are being trained by Carlo Gajewski, who is tackling a gruelling 285 mile cycle ride over the Pyrenees on the same weekend.
Sarah said: “There have been some injuries along with way, but we are really excited about it, and we want to raise as much money as possible.”
All proceeds from the concert - from which they are hoping to raise £25,000 - will be divided equally between the three women’s cancer charities, Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action, as well as Bloodwise, which is Carlo’s charity.
