Caroline Jones, 47, of Harpenden, set out at the beginning of 2015 to raise just £1,000 for Cancer Research UK in memory of her mother, Mary Benson, by wearing charity shop clothes for every day of the year.

Her campaign, named ‘Knickers Model’s Own’, met global success and became a social media sensation, causing Caroline’s target to increase to 36,500- £100 for every day.

The total has since topped £49,000 and Caroline named a ‘Point of Light’ by Prime Minister David Cameron on December 31, the last day of her campaign.

The award recognises outstanding individual volunteers who are making a change in their community.

PM David Cameron said: “Caroline has come up with an innovative way to pay tribute to her mother and raise a fantastic amount of money for charity. Her challenge to wear a different charity shop outfit every day has clearly caught people’s imaginations and inspired them to support her idea.”

Caroline posted to her popular Facebook page: “As if my final day could get any better, my lovely Postie just delivered this from the Prime Minister, David Cameron, a Points of Light award. A huge honour and the perfect end to my year.”
