UNEMPLOYMENT is continuing to rise in the St Albans district with 2.2 per cent of the local population claiming Jobseeker's Allowance according to figures for October.

The monthly claimant count has risen from 1,747 in September to 1,793 last month even though it has fallen by 162 in Herts as a whole.

During the same month last year, there were 914 claimants amounting to a 96.2 per cent change in the past 12 months.

There are still considerably more men claiming than women - 1,231 men compared with 562 women - and the number of unfilled vacancies currently stands at 670 which is 52 more than were available in October last year.
