TWO distraction burglars who cheated a St Albans victim and three others in Herts have been jailed for a total of 14 years.

Andrew Hanrahan, aged 27, and Barbara McCann, 23, would approach elderly and vulnerable victims and tell them they had won a pair of curtains. McCann would then enter the premises to take "measurements" while Hanrahan would take money and items from the victim.

Hanrahan, of Harrow, was convicted of conspiracy to burgle on four occasions in Herts, three in Beds and one in London. He was also convicted of possession of ammonia and handling a stolen vehicle.

McCann, of Uxbridge, was sentenced for the four burglaries in Herts and three in Beds. She was sentenced to six-and-a-half years and Hanrahan to seven-and-a-half years.

Jailing the duo, Judge Plumstead said: "A society which does not protect its elderly people is not worth living in and you two are not fit to live in this society.
