HUNDREDS of people are expected to brave the cold and sleep outside to raise money for homeless charities next month.

The 17th annual Sleepout will take place at the Abbey next Friday, December 3, and will see people of all ages – including the Deputy Mayor of St Albans – sleeping rough between 9pm until around 7am the following morning.

The event aims to raise awareness of what it is like to sleep rough and have no shelter, as well as raising thousands of pounds for charities including St Albans night shelter Open Door, which is located in Bricket Road and is open every day of the year.

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Beric Read, said: “I am participating on behalf of the St Albans charity, Open Door. This is an excellent cause and I encourage everyone to contribute something.”
