A BLOOMING plant at a retirement complex has left one of the residents amazed.

Hetty Eames, of Betty Entwistle House, St Albans, said the hollyhock growing up the wall outside the home in Holyrood Crescent is the biggest she has ever seen.

The 88-year-old mother of five said: “Last year there was one stalk growing up the wall but this year it has gone absolutely mad. It’s nearly up to the sky! And it’s in bloom now, so it’s absolutely beautiful. I can’t believe it, it’s almost up to the first floor.”

Mrs Eames, who first noticed the plant growing tall in the spring, said it bloomed while she was away on a recent trip to see her daughter in Wales.

She is keen to hear from any horticulturalists who can tell her how unusual it is to have a hollyhock grow so tall.
