Pop superstar George Michael, who died on Christmas Day, was brought up in Radlett during his formative years and retained some links with the area after finding fame.

George, whose real name was Panayiotou, moved to the village from Finchley with his parents and two sisters, Melanie and Yioda.

He went on to attend Bushey Meads School where he met Andrew Ridgeley with whom he formed Wham! in 1981.

Fame took him away from Radlett but he is understood to have secretly funded a performance in St Albans some years after he left of Quilt: A Musical Celebration, which was on the subject of AIDS.

Such philanthropic acts have come to light since his death at the age of 53, thought to have been from a heart attack.

In 2013 he was taken to hospital after an accident on the M1 motorway near St Albans in which he suffered a head injury and was flown by air ambulance to a London hospital for a treatment. He was believed to have fallen from the passenger seat of a moving car which trying to close the door properly but he made a full recovery from his injuries.
