Some clothing in St Albans City Hospital porter's block caught alight at around 4.30pm on Sunday and the flames were out by the time firefighters arrived.
The room was heavily smoke-logged so the fire service ventilated the area on their arrival but nobody was injured in the incident.
CCTV footage of the scene is being examined to determine the cause of fire.
