THOUSANDS of pounds were raised by members of the crew of HMS St Albans when they came to the city to collect for Help for Heroes.

The serving naval officers visited some of the city centre pubs on Friday evening and collected £1,312 for the charity alone.

On Saturday they set up shop outside St Albans Clock Tower where they promoted the sale of wristbands to the public and raised awareness of the charity.

In the afternoon they were guests of St Albans City Football Club and in the evening they continued selling wristbands by touring other city watering holes.

On Saturday they raised £2005 which made a total of £3,317 over the two days – considerably more than they collected last year.
