Hitchin and Harpenden MP Bim Afolami has visited Syrian families resettled in the area and supported by the Refugee Council.

The Refugee Council works with local councils to make sure families can access support they need to start recovering from traumatic experiences, and start to rebuild their lives during their first 12 months in the UK. It helps them register for services, find schools for their children, learn English and get to know the area.

Mr Afolami said: “It was wonderful to meet the families and see how, with the support of the Refugee Council and the warm welcome of local people, they are beginning to rebuild their lives here.”

The Refugee Council’s Hannah Picking said: “Each Syrian refugee welcomed by Hertfordshire will have their life transformed, if not saved by this programme.

“It’s fantastic that communities across the county are helping to uphold Britain’s long history of welcoming refugees during their hour of greatest need, and Bim Afolami’s visit was a great example of this welcome.”
