THE number of successful claims for compensation from people hurt on the roads and pavements in the St Albans district has more than doubled in the last two years.

Between 2006 and 2007 there were more than 207 claims but only 34 of these were successful and cost around £17,000 to settle.

But in 2007/08, though there were slightly fewer complaints, 74 people were successful and claimed £28,600.

Herts County Councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst, the Lib-Dem highways spokesperson, said: "The state of our roads and pavements is a disgrace. This is clearly shown by the numbers applying for compensation. What is needed in Herts is sensible investment and a review of how we fix our roads and pavements."

Countywide more than £2 million has been paid out in the last five years to 1,500 people.

This compares to £270,000 paid out during the same period to 240 people in St Albans and district.
