A HIGH Court challenge has been launched by St Albans District Council into housing overspill into the district included in the East of England Regional Plan.
Proceedings have begun over the issue which could see St Albans being forced to accept overflow housing from the development of sites in Welwyn-Hatfield and Dacorum.
The fear is that it will lead to the joining up of St Albans with Welwyn-Hatfield and Hemel Hempstead but is out of the district council's hands because the new housing developments emanate elsewhere in the county.
The district council's planning portfolio holder, Cllr Chris Brazier, said they were taking the action to challenge the expansion of Hemel Hempstead and Welwyn-Hatfield into the St Albans district which was not happening anywhere else in Herts.
