Deer warning signs have gone up across the district to create awareness that it is the rutting season.

The warnings have appeared on variable message signs in a number of locations including the A414 St Albans to Hemel Hempstead Road and on the North Orbital Road, close to the Park Street roundabout

Terry Douris, county cabinet member for highways, said the signs were running on all the variable message signs across Herts as part of a campaign to increase awareness of deer during rutting season. This ties in with a national campaign being run by the Highways Agency and Deer Aware.

He added: “This is part of a wider approach by Hertfordshire’s highways team to help keep road users safe and to protect deer in the county. In locations which are known migration crossing points we have deer fences in place, especially on major new roads, but because the wild deer population is so widespread we can’t protect every road.

“We would urge motorists to be cautious and drive a little slower at this time of the year, especially on rural A roads.”
