A HEAD-on collision between a car and a lorry closed a road for more than two hours this morning (Thursday).

The accident along Colney Heath Lane in St Albans at around 10am left the driver of the crashed red Nissan Micra trapped for more than an hour.

Firefighters worked to free him using cutting equipment and he was removed from the wreckage on a spinal board before being taken to the QE2 Hospital in Welwyn Garden City with leg injuries.

Two fire crews from St Albans attended the scene along with the Rescue Support Unit from Hatfield.

The crew commander said that they removed the roof and did a "dashboard roll" to create more space around his legs. The victim was conscious throughout.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service who attended the crash praised all the emergency services for their professionalism at the scene.

Police closed the road from the junction with the A414 and Barley Mow Lane until just before midday.
