AN ONLINE survey is being carried out by the district council into its plans to transform the Town Hall into the Museum of St Albans.

The project forms part of the council’s 10-year improvement plan for St Albans’ museums.

The first phase involves moving the Museum of St Albans from Hatfield Road into the Town Hall in St Peter’s Street.

It is hoped the city centre location will make the museum’s post-Roman collection more accessible and visible to visitors.

To obtain feedback on the proposals, the Museum of St Albans set up shop in the old Thorntons store in Market Place last week and will be running workshops for 14 to 19 year olds throughout October and November at both the St Albans museums.

Places are available by calling 01727 751810.

Cllr Mike Wakely, the council’s portfolio holder for sports, leisure and heritage, said: “The council is keen to hear from residents and visitors about what they think about the plans to improve St Albans’ museums.

“These exciting plans include transforming the Town Hall into a museum to explain the city’s post-Roman history and expanding the popular Verulamium Museum.

“These plans are moving forward and we now have a fascinating detailed conservation report on the history of the old Town Hall. Plans are dependent on securing funding from outside bodies. We are also keen to hear from generous benefactors wishing to help develop a new museum for future posterity at this iconic city centre location.”

He added: “We are currently putting together a bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help make the plans for the Museum of St Albans become a reality.”
