The search is on to find the thief who stole a £375 gilet from a charity shop.

A brand new, bright green, Ralph Lauren gilet, valued at £325 but being sold for £120, was stolen from the Harpenden Cancer Research UK (CRUK) shop between 1-3.30pm on Sunday (17).

The store has its own Twitter account, with a number of people following it for updates about what’s in store, and a picture of the gilet was tweeted on Saturday (16) before being taken the following day.

Manager Ann Jay, said: “I was furious that someone would steal from a shop that raises money to beat cancer. The volunteers who work here are also very upset.

“I put a sign in the window in the hope of pricking the conscience of the person who took it, to either return it or pay for it.

“Our customers have been very sympathetic and they too can’t believe someone would do such a thing.

“Incidents like this are upsetting but thankfully rare, and with support from the public and our wonderful volunteers, we will bounce back.”

If you have any information about the missing gilet please contact Herts Police on the non-emergency number 101.

A CRUK spokesperson was keen to point out that, although it is an important donation, a trial could not be funded with the £120 gilet.
