GNINE Harpenden infant and primary schools have risen to a Christmas challenge and filled nearly 700 shoeboxes with gifts.

The youngsters have been filling the boxes to send to children in orphanages and hospitals and to elderly people in Eastern and Central European countries.

Harpenden Village Rotary Club provided the boxes and club president Lynn Blackwell said: 'There are now a good many sick and disadvantaged children and elderly people the other side of Europe with reason to be grateful to pupils and their parents for their generosity.'

She also thanked head teachers and their teaching staff for their "unstinting support" and added: "This is a fantastic achievement so well done to everyone involved!
