Thousands of pounds were raised for charity after a Swimathon Challenge at a town pool earlier this year.

The event, organised by St Albans council in conjunction with Leisure Connection, formed part of the world’s largest fundraising swim which took place at 500 pools across the UK in April.

More than 40 swimmers swam 50, 100 or 200 lengths of the Harpenden pool to fundraise for Marie Curie Cancer Care and they raised 5,466 towards a nationwide figure of more than 2 million across the UK.

Cllr Anthony Rowlands, portfolio holder for sport and leisure at St Albans council, said: “This is a fantastic effort by all concerned. Well done to everyone who took part in this worthwhile event.”
