HOME-MADE soup has helped a Harpenden charity raise hundreds of pounds for Parkinson’s Disease sufferers.
The Inner Wheel Club of Harpenden Village presented a cheque for �750 to the West Hertfordshire Branch of Parkinson’s UK at their May meeting at Aldwickbury Park Golf Club last week.
The Inner Wheel women held a soup kitchen in January and, in spite of the awful weather, they managed to raise just over �1,300 on the day which was shared between Parkinson’s UK and the Heartwood Forest tree fund.
The money will help fund the further training of Parkinson’s Disease Nurse Specialists Rachel Naylor and Julie Thomas, who have recently started work in West Hertfordshire following a lengthy campaign by the local Parkinson’s UK branch.
The nurses will work as part of multi-disciplinary teams treating those with Parkinson’s, and they will bring quicker response times, greater flexibility and easier access to treatment for those suffering from Parkinson’s.
Chairman of the West Hertfordshire Parkinson’s UK branch Mike Peaker, who accepted the cheque from Elizabeth Curran, the President of the Harpenden Village Inner Wheel, said that the contribution would go a long way towards providing effective treatment for the disease.
