CONCERNED schoolchildren moved by the earthquakes and tsunamis that struck Japan held a fundraiser at their junior school.

The Grove School in Harpenden held a Japanese-themed afternoon tea, where sushi was served alongside tea and cakes that pupils and their parents had made.

The event managed to raise 375 in just over an hour, and the junior school estimated that a few hundred people supported the fundraiser.

It was organised after one pupil, who had relatives in Japan, asked headteacher Pippa Bremner if the school could raise money for the Red Cross Tsunami appeal.

Mrs Bremner said: “I’m very proud of all our pupils who worked incredibly hard to put together this event and their effort demonstrates the caring ethos of our school.

“I’d also like to thank parents who gave us so much help on the day and all those who supported the event by coming along.”
