Residents are being warned to expect traffic problems as thousands of people descend upon Harpenden for the annual Classics on the Common car convention next Wednesday.

Leyton Road will be closed and diversions put in place for the duration of the event, with traffic delays highly likely.

The prospect of busier roads has urged the council to organise extra parking for the expected numbser of visitors.

The Harpenden Rovers’ field will be transformed from a football pitch to a car park for the day, subject to the condition of the grounds.

A final decision will be made on the morning and updated on the Classics on the Common website, with signs to alternative parking put in place if conditions are bad.

Entry and exit to the field will be via Cravells Road, and spectators going to the event are advised to cross Walkers Road to reach the main Common.

Parking at Rothamsted Research will be available after 6pm, and will be signposted appropriately.

The Common will see countless classic and quirky vehicles grace the lawn for the event, which spans the day and is organised by Harpenden Rotary Club.

Thousands of vintage motors, from cars and camper vans to motorcycles and scooters will be on display.

Last year’s event raised £23,000 for charity, and this year’s main beneficiaries will be Community Meeting Point, Alzheimer’s Society (Local Branch), Youth Talk, Macmillan Cancer Support and Guildford Rotary Eye Project.

Cars will be arriving from 2pm, with entry free for spectators, although donations are appreciated.

No vehicles will be permitted without an entry ticket which have sold out in advance.

More information on the event can be found at www.classicsonthecommon.com
