Classic cars have helped to keep the rotors running on the Herts Air Ambulance.

It was one of the charities chosen to benefit from last summer’s Classics on the Common which was organised by Harpenden Village Rotary Club and drew in a 10,000-strong crowd who browsed through 1,200 classic vehicles on display.

Classics on the Common was in its 20th year and raised a record £23,000 for charity. Herts Air Ambulance received a donation of £4.400 while other charities to receive donations included Harpenden’s local branch of the Samaritans, Keech Children’s Hospice and Water Aid.

Event organiser, Rotarian Richard Bellingham, said: “From small beginnings this event has grown into a major community event for the town as well as attracting classic vehicles from all over the country. On the day, we had a force of Rotarians and other volunteers totalling 100, marshalling the vehicles and collecting donations from the spectators for our chosen charities.

“It’s a great family day and the community responds very generously by way of donations.”
