Harpenden MP Bim Afolami has asked the Treasury whether it will review the business rates system.
The system has been criticised after huge increases were levied on St Albans city centre pubs.
Mr Afolami said: “It has come up with several small business owners in the constituency, and it is an area of real focus for me.
“Over the coming months I will be pushing the government to do more to reduce the burden on small businesses in particular - they are the lifeblood of Harpenden and Hitchin.”
Treasury minister Mel Stride replied: “The government has announced major reforms worth approximately £9bn to businesses by the end of this Parliament.
“The Autumn Budget delivered more support on business rates, including bringing forward the switch to CPI indexation, revalue properties more frequently and to address the staircase tax.”
