Friends of a golf club stalwart swung into action when they learned the motor neurone disease sufferer needed money to attend his son’s graduation in America.
Harpenden Common Golf Club arranged a benevolent day for Paul Fox to ensure they raised sufficient funds for him to travel across the pond,
Three generations of the Fox family have played at the golf club - Paul’s grandfather Podger Fox and son Marcus have teed off there over the years.
And Paul’s friends were so keen to ensure they raised the money that even though the benevolent day was held in atrocious conditions, nearly 90 players turned out and gave of their best.
The weather was such that the event was shortened to a nine hole tournament but the course played well and the greens drained exceptionally which result in Dave Kyle’s team taking the top prize with an impressive score of 47 points.
After the tournament, the teams were joined by guests for a hog roast and refreshments served at the bar in the recently-opened new clubhouse. Then ex-captain and auctioneer, David Tilleke, put donated lots under the hammer and encouraged the audience to bid for them.
The day raised just over £17,000 which will enable Paul and his family to travel to America.
