A YOUNG swimmer from Harpenden took to the pool to help raise money for a woman in need of two new legs.

Sian Unwin, aged 10, of St James Road, swam 50 laps of Harpenden swimming pool earlier this month in aid of one of her grandmother's friends, 56-year-old Diane Harrison-Fuller, who has had both her legs amputated over the last couple of years.

Sian, a pupil at Manland Primary School, said she was inspired to fundraise by her grandma, Beth Wrangles: "Gran goes to a scrapbooking club with Diane and she decided a couple of months ago that she wanted to buy some good artificial legs for her friend. I really wanted to help and I'm glad I could do my bit by raising 300 for the cause with my sponsored swim."

Proud

Beth, who is planning an autumn Christmas fair to add to the funds, said she was very proud of Sian: "Our project for Diane, New Legs for the Old, was born three months ago and we at the scrapbooking club are determined to help Diane get a brand new pair of glamorous artificial legs. The sponsored swim was all Sian's idea and it's an honour to have such a considerate granddaughter."

Beth, who lives in St Albans, and her Hertford scrapbook club, the Scruffbags, will host an autumn Christmas fair on November 11 at Christchurch Baptist Church in Welwyn Garden City from 11am to 3pm to help add to the New Legs for the Old project.
