Harpenden couple looking to start Come Dine with Me style supper club
An elderly man who found love again after his wife died from dementia is looking to start a Come Dine with Me-style supper club with fellow couples.
Mike Senyard, of Harpenden, lost his wife to dementia following a nine-year battle and found a new lease of life when he met his new girlfriend Joanna Segalov.
The pair, who live on the same road, take part in numerous activities but want to start something different and set up a supper club for couples aged 60 plus.
Mike said: “I don’t know many people around here because I only moved here five years ago when my wife was very ill.
“After she died they told me to go out and enjoy life and that’s when I met Joanna at bridge club.”
He continued: “We’re looking for couples who love to eat, drink, and put the world to rights.”
Mike’s daughter, Anne Wright, who also lives in Harpenden, said: “He’s not ready to be the ‘retired pensioner’ just yet. He wants to have some more fun. He said a lot of the other groups he’s come across haven’t been what he’s looking for.”
The club would take place every week or so, with about three or four couples alternating as hosts.
Despite taking inspiration from the hit Channel 4 TV show Come Dine with Me where dinner guests rate each other’s dinner parties, Mike insists they do not want to make it competitive.
He added: “It is not intended that such meetings should develop into a competition to produce ever more exotic dishes nor to make such meetings a tremendous chore for the host.
“In the past we have had many joyous occasions when the host provides the main course and the other bring, say, the starter and a dessert.”
