INTREPID explorers from a charitable club in Harpenden are Snowdon-bound for their latest fundraising adventure.

A team of four members of Harpenden Lions Club will be climbing the Welsh mountain on Saturday, May 22, as part of the Snowdon 500 challenge, an event organised by the Prostate Cancer Research centre.

The Harpenden Lions 254 - comprising Paul Nield, Tony Usher, Chris Edwards and Bengie Walden, all of whom are from Harpenden or Redbourn - will be joining nearly 500 other fundraisers on the sponsored walk to the summit of Mt Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales.

Paul, 64, said that he was inspired to enter a team after reading an article in the club's magazine: "I saw that one of our members sadly had prostate cancer and after reading about his story, I felt like I wanted to do something to show my support. Luckily a couple of members agreed to join me and we now have 254 years of experience between us all!"

The Harpenden Lions 254 are aiming to raise 2,000 for the Prostate Cancer Research Centre and they begin their training at the end of this month, when all four will walk together from Wendover in Bucking-hamshire to Ivinghoe Beacon in the Chiltern Hills.

Paul said that he thought the team would be fighting fit by May and added: "We are all seasoned walkers so nobody is feeling too apprehensive about the climb.

"It should be a great deal of fun and I for one am looking forward to the challenge."
