Hundreds gathered to welcome some esteemed guests at the jubilee celebrations of a church.

All Saints Church on Station Road, Harpenden, celebrated its 50th birthday recently, holding a special service and serving up lunch for 200 churchgoers.

Countess Verulam, Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, and the Bishop of St Albans, Revd Alan Smith, were just some of the notable names at the service.

The church had not one, but three cakes, which were cut by the Bishop with the help of the children in attendance.

The Bishop later blessed the new church toilet- which has been twinned with a toilet in Africa.

Guests all came together to place a stone on the Jubilee Cairn and later gathered in a marquee for a hog roast lunch.

The couple who were the first married at the church in 1965, Angela and Dennis Coleman, also joined the parade of churchgoers, and still live in Batford today.

The church will continue celebrations throughout the year with a concert on October 17 and a special event on All Saints Day on November 1.
