AFTER years of wrangling, Harpenden can finally fly its coveted Green Flag on the common.
The latest application by the town council to put up the flagpole was agreed by St Albans district councillors at a planning meeting on Monday night.
Harpenden Common has been voted one of England's best green spaces for two years in succession but until now, the town council has never been allowed to fly the green insignia to mark its success on its own flagpole.
The first planning application was rejected in December 2007, when planners decided that the size and design of the flagpole would ruin the rural character of the surroundings.
But the new application reduced the height of the flagpole and slightly changed its suggested position, placing it in line with the rear of The Common car park rather than close to the edge of St Albans Road.
Harpenden Town Mayor Pat Kent said that the news had made her day: "I'm over the moon! It's absolutely brilliant that we can finally show off our flag and I can't wait to get it up and flying as soon as possible.
