AN annual Christmas Appeal has broken through the 25,000 barrier for the first time.

The Harpenden Trust raised the money through an envelope collection despite the economic situation in the country and the hazardous winter weather which hampered the work of collectors.

Appeal organiser Graham Westwell said: "We are most grateful to the people of Harpenden for their generosity, especially in these difficult times.

"We rely on the appeal raising at least one-third of the funds we need to cope with the needs of the town's disadvantaged individuals and families so every extra pound raised makes a difference."
