A LOCAL industrial estate had to be evacuated after a factory with volatile gas cylinders inside caught alight.

Firefighters were called to the scene at Fleming Fabrications in the Riverside Industrial Estate, London Colney, at around 12.30pm on Tuesday afternoon.

The crews, including two from St Albans, evacuated the affected single-storey factory as well as the surrounding buildings in case of any explosion.

But they managed to cool the oxygen and acetylene cylinders down using water jets and quickly put out the fire surrounding them. The cause was accidental.

The firefighters left the scene at around 3.30pm.
