SPRING has sprung at Willows Farm Village in London Colney, where over a hundred lambs were born this week.

Nearly 150 bouncing baby sheep were born during February Frolics week at the farm and most of the new arrivals entered the world to an audience of children on their half-term holiday.

Farmer Andrew Wolfe timed the birth of the lambs so that they all arrived during the holiday and, during the busiest rush, he was delivering one new-born every hour with the help of his wife and farm shop manager, Anna Wolfe.

Said Andrew, who set up the farm village over a decade ago: "The February Frolics week was a great opportunity for children to witness the spectacular event of a birth. It was a completely new and fascinating experience for many of them and it was great to see their looks of astonishment."

Lambing season is one of the busiest times on a farm and the sheep at Willows averaged two lambs each, with two of them giving birth to quads. Said an exhausted Andrew: "I'm in need of a good night's sleep but it's all been worth it because the youngsters got to see a bit of nature at work."

He added: "The kids were completely unphased by the births, it's the older visitors who are the most squeamish. After one of the births, a 78-year-old woman came up to me and said it was the strangest thing she'd ever seen in her whole life!"

Lauren Bennett, a seven-year-old Killigrew Infants School pupil, held one of the two-hour old lambs and said it was a very strange experience: "It's the first time I've ever held a lamb and it was funny to feel its little heart beating. I'm going to tell all my school friends about it on Monday."

The Willows lambs, who learnt how to stand and feed within hours of being born, will stay with their mothers for about five months and you can go and watch them frolicking in the fields every day of the week.
