FIREFIGHTERS have brought a major fire at Verulam School in St Albans under control.
The blaze broke out in a first-floor classroom in the French block of the school at around 11.30am this morning (Tuesday).
Five fire crews, the aerial ladder platform (ALP) and numerous police cars were called to the scene in Brampton Road.
Speaking outside the school this afternoon, St Albans fire station watch commander Tony Bates said that at least three classrooms had been badly damaged by the fire.
He added: "The school was totally evacuated when we got here and the fire had broken through the ceiling and into the roof."
He said that eight firefighters in breathing apparatus took water jets inside the school and firefighters were on the ALP cutting away the smouldering roof to dampen down the blaze.
Firefighters and police are currently on the scene investigating what caused the fire.
