FIRE gutted the newly-refurbished Redbourn Cricket Club pavilion in the early hours of this morning (Thursday).
The alarm was raised at about 2am by a resident whose home overlooks the Common where the pavilion is sited.
Eight fire crews arrived to find the building, which measures around 30 metres by 20 metres engulfed in the flames.
The crews - from Redbourn, Markyate, Harpenden, Wheathampstead, Hemel Hempstead and Rickmansworth - spent about two hours fighting the blaze.
Experts were sifting through the remains and the cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious.
The village cricket club has had a very successful season and was recently named Club of the Year at the league awards.
