Flights in and out of Luton Airport are back to normal after yesterday’s (Monday) security alert, which resulted in an evacuation and road closure.

An airport representative confirmed that flights resumed from 10pm last night.

About 1,500 passengers were evacuated from the terminal building at about 1.30pm after airport security raised concerns about an item that was passed through a security check.

They were evacuated as a safety precaution while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were called in to undertake checks.

A controlled explosion was conducted at 5.15pm and it was confirmed that the item was destroyed and although deemed suspicious, did not present a wider danger.

A Bedfordshire Police representative said that no one has been arrested in relation to the incident.

There were various media reports that the suspicious package was believed to have been a household item such as curling irons.

An airport spokesman said that staff have been, “working hard throughout the night and into this morning.

“We would like to thank passengers for their patience and cooperation during this time.”
