CASUAL swimming lessons in the St Albans district are to be free for over-60s and under-16s from next Wednesday, April 1.

It is part of the Government's swim4life initiative which is linked to a wider campaign to get people to lead more active and healthy lives in the run-up to the London Olympics.

In order to avoid queues, swimmers are advised to register before the launch date at their local participating swimming pool -- at Bricket Wood, including Townsend, pool on 01923 662224, at Harpenden on 01582 460683 and at Westminster Lodge on 01727 846031.

Cllr Sheila Burton, portfolio holder for sport and healthy living, said: "Grab your trunks and bathers and get down to your nearest pool. I hope that many residents who have not previously considered swimming will now be encouraged to try this relatively easy way of keeping fit.
