A main road in St Albans has reopened following the hospitalisation of four people involved in a major collision between an ambulance and a car this morning.

A man and a woman are seriously injured following the incident which occurred in Watford Road at about 10am today (24).

The road was closed at the junction with St Stephens Avenue and Abbey Avenue while emergency services worked at the scene.

It is said that a 47 year old and his mother, who is in her 70s, had to be cut out of their vehicle, a Volkswagon Polo, and the man flown to Royal London Hospital by air ambulance and the woman conveyed to Watford General Hospital by land ambulance.

The two ambulance crew members involved in the collision were also injured and have been taken to Watford General Hospital, one with a chest injury and another with minor injuries.

The ambulance was on its way to treat a patient when it hit a car that pulled out of St Stephens Road [Avenue] to turn right, witnesses claim.

The ambulance then spun and ended facing the other direction as it hit the wall of a house, a source told the Herts Advertiser.

The patient that the ambulance was on its way to treat is in the care of a paramedic.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: “We are providing full support to the immediate family of our staff involved, and will be assisting our police colleagues with any resulting investigations.

“We’d like to express our sincere thanks to our fellow ambulance colleagues who provided care to all four patients at the scene, and our police and fire colleagues for their support.”
