A former bus conductress rang in her 100th year recently with lunch and a champagne reception attended by her two sons, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Helen Elizabeth Stocker, of Verulam House nursing and residential home in St Albans, also worked as a dressmaker in her heyday and was known to travel into the city centre right up to the age of 98.

Her son John Stocker said his mother, the eldest of eight children, had a lovely time celebrating her birthday with the extended family.

Mrs Stocker was born on January 5, 1914, in Euston where she lived with her grandmother until she was 14. She met her husband Fred at the age of 16 and they were married in 1936. When her husband passed away in 1985 she moved to St Albans where she lived in Lattimore Road for many years.
