The engine no 60103 Flying Scotsman was making the London Victoria to Whitby run as part of the Cathedral Express operated by Steam Dreams, and was named the “Moors and Dales Explorer”.

It was snapped by aficionado Jim Whittamore, who said: “The engine looked in stunning condition as it went through.”

Although the train did not stop at the station, it did pass St Albans South Signal Box, the restored landmark adjacent to one of the platforms.

The 60103 Flying Scotsman was originally built in 1923 for the London and North East Railway Company, and in 1934 became the first steam locomotive to travel at an authenticated speed of 100 mph.
