THE FLOOD status of the River Colne in Colney Heath has been upgraded, with the Environment Agency (EA) this morning issuing a flood warning.
The agency said the river level had continued to rise slowly overnight, and now poses a risk to properties near it in the village.
Changing yesterday’s status of flood alert to warning at about 4am, the EA added: “The river level is higher than what was reached recently on April 29.
“The river may continue to rise slowly for a few more hours. Residents near the river are advised to check their property and take appropriate action.”
It is the second time the river has breached its banks in less than two months, as its waters rose towards homes along Park Lane after the district experienced its wettest April on record.
The EA said the river had flooded low-lying land and gardens in London Colney overnight also.
There are now six flood warnings in place for the south east and 44 flood alerts issued by the EA for the region, including for the upper River Colne and Tykes Water (Radlett Brook) in Radlett, and River Lea in Wheathampstead and Harpenden.
