RESIDENTS in Wheathampstead and Harpenden have been warned that a flood alert has been issued for the River Lea.

Following continuous rain overnight, the Environment Agency said that while it is not expecting flooding to properties at this stage there could be surface water flooding problems.

It issued the flood alert at about 8am this morning (Monday June 11).

The agency said: β€œA band of heavy rain has moved from France overnight and continues to pass over with further heavy rain expected through Monday morning and into the afternoon.

β€œIn response to this rainfall river levels could rise quickly and come out of banks in places and cause flooding to low-lying land and roads.”

The agency added that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and will escalate the alert to a flood warning if necessary. However no warnings have yet been issued for the River Colne, a site of recent flooding.
