Classmates from St Albans County Grammar School for Boys, which is now Verulam School, will be reminiscing about old times when they meet up in September for a school reunion.

One of the organisers of the event, Colin Coke, decided to track down his old school friends on the internet after he bought a new computer.

Grant Peerless, 72, who lives in St Albans and first started at the school in 1954, explained: “One of the organisers bought a computer and started building up a picture of those that went to school and eventually contacted them by email to try and organise a get-together.

“We will be having a sit-down lunch and then reminiscing afterwards into the evening, I haven’t seen some of these people in 50 or 60 years.”

After receiving a surprise visit from one of his old school friends, Grant is particularly looking forward to the day, he said: “One of the old boys actually called me last week and I hadn’t seen him for 67 years, it was quite out of the blue.

“I had been emailing him but he actually just turned up on the doorstep and we had a good evening chatting about the good old days.”

Although its been more than 50 years since they were last at school, Grant still remembers what it was like. He said: “School then, the discipline was far more than it is nowadays and the masters used to wear gowns and you lived in fear of them really. Nowadays it is much more friendly, it’s probably for the best.

“The school hasn’t changed an awful lot; there have been a lot of extensions put on over the years, but it’s still recognised as the school I went to all those years ago.”
