Four local families teamed up to have bubble the fun raising money for a hospice close to their hearts.
The Flamstead team, Nic’s Army, ran 5k in aid of The Hospice of St Francis as part of recent event Bubble Rush Herts.
They were not alone - some 2,200 people braved paths of pink, blue, green, and yellow foam around Gadebridge Park in Hemel Hempstead in order to reach the finish line.
Nic’s Army was named in memory of mother-of-three Nicola Byrne, 43, who passed away at the hospice a few weeks ago.
Team soldiers Edward and Oliver Able-Smith said they wanted to recognise the care Nicola received.
Pandora Smith, 10-year-old Edward’s mum, said: “They all had a brilliant time running through the bubbles. It was the first time any of us had done Bubble Rush but we wanted to do something to support the hospice.”
Edward raised £625 so far - smashing an initial £250 target and crowning him one of the event’s top fund raisers.
The youngest team member was four-year-old Dylan Norton.
Bubble Rush event manager at the hospice, Lauren Parker, said: “This year’s event was so much fun and it was terrific to see so many people running the course with big smiles on their faces despite the chilly temperature.
“There was such a lovely atmosphere as people turned out to support the hospice and enjoy the fun of the bubbles.
“We have been so impressed with the amount of fund raising people have been doing in the run up to this year’s Bubble Rush – particularly by the children.
“We’d like to thank everyone for working so hard to raise money for us. Without such a tremendous level of support we wouldn’t be able to continue to provide care and support to patients and families across Herts and Bucks.”
The hospice’s next fundraising event will be The Midnight Walk on June 16. Part of the Apsley and Hemel Hempstead route will be lit by candlelight and there will be a UV zone.
The charity provides free care and support for people living with life-limiting illnesses. It helps more than 2,000 people every year.
