A WATERBIRD was rescued by firefighters yesterday on Monday after its neck became entangled in a fishing wire at a local lake.

The RSPCA was called to the fishing pools at Willows Farm in London Colney at around 5.15pm when the cormorant was spotted in trouble.

The bird was stuck on an island in the middle of the lake wrapped in the wire and iwith the hook caught in its breast.

The RSPCA animal collection officer called on the assistance of firefighters after finding herself unable to rescue the bird on her own.

Hatfield fire station's water incident team and a fire crew from St Albans got to the scene just after 7pm. They used a boat to reach the bird which was then taken to the Tiggywinkles Animal Hospital near Aylesbury for treatment.
