Several local fire crews attended a collision between two articulated lorries on the M1 last night (Monday), where they helped free a trapped driver.
Crew commander at St Albans fire station Sean Costello said that firefighters were called to the scene of the collision, on the nearside southbound lanes of the M1, J8-9, at 8.50pm.
Crews from St Albans joined counterparts from Redbourn, Hemel Hempstead and Markyate at the crash.
Mr Costello said that a high level platform was used to elevate firefighters, enabling them to access the driver of one lorry and cut him from the cab.
Paul Redhead, watch commander at Hemel, said that paramedics were then able to ease the driver out of the vehicle.
He said: “All the emergency services worked well together.”
A spokeswoman for the East of England Ambulance Service Trust said the driver was taken to Luton and Dunstable Hospital for treatment to his hand.
A spokeswoman for Herts Police said both lorries had to be recovered from the motorway, and that all lanes were reopened before 11pm.
